There have been a couple of previews of Penryn during the last few weeks. The last to publish a preview is Anandtech. Previous previews have shown performance improvements of 0 to 30%, but since they’ve all been using different test systems it’s hard to compare the results. Anandtech’s results are not that different from the rest though. It shows improvements in games and practical applications up to 10%, while synthetic benchmarks range from 0-10%. The perhaps most interesting about this preview is that Anandtech also tested the latency of the new and larger cache, and surprisingly it is actually faster (fewer cycles and lower latency) than the Conroe cache. Things are certainly looking good for Intel.
