Small preview imageAMD Socket F, also known as Socket 1207, will become a platform for AMD’s coming dual-core and quad-core Opteron processors. Except from Socket F having a lot of pins it is different from most of today’s AMD processor sockets. First of all Socket F will use an LGA design, just as Intel’s Socket 775 where the pins are on the motherboard instead of on the processor. AMD has also chosen to move on to another attachment system for the processor, also similar to the one Intel uses. Intel will continue to use its LGA sockets with Socket 771 for its Xeon processors and now AMD also has an LGA socket coming.
