Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition is more less ready now and confirmed to be the next big update from AMD. The graphics card has been pictured with complete specifications in a recent leak that speaks of a Tahiti XT2 GPU and GPU clock frequency at 1100 MHz.

AMD has realized that the flagship Radeon HD 7970 is having a hard time keeping up with NVIDIA’s top model GeForce GTX 680. The green camp managed to get better peak performance and keep the temperatures low in a more efficient manner.

While waiting for a new architecture and graphcis card family AMD has made the only right thing and developed a tuned version of Radeon HD 7970; the name will be Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition. This follows the same pattern used with both Radeon HD 7800 and 7700. The graphics card uses a new GPU called Tahiti XT2 that gets seriously improved clock frequencies from factory.

Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition will sport a GPU clock frequency at 1100 MHz – 175 MHz higher than stock Radeon HD 7970. Not only that, AMD says it has lowered the GPU voltage to 1.020V from 1.175V  in Tahiti XT. This will give the card an extra boost in performance, while keeping the energy consumption at a reasonable level.

In case AMD and circuit maker TSMC have played their cards right Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition will be both considerably more powerful and energy efficient than the predecessor. If it is enough to keep up with GeForce GTX 680 we will know soon since the launch is slated for late June.

The price of Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition has not yet been revealed, but dependin on the performance it should be on the same level as GeForce GTX 680 – somewhere around $500-$550.
