AMD looks to be preparing a new top model for the Phenom II family before the launch of the new Bulldozer architecture and AMD FX processor family. Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition use four cores clocked at 3.7 GHz. AMD sets a new clock frequency record for its retail processors.

AMD Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition supplies the four CPU cores with 256KB dedicated L2 cache, and 6MB shared L3 cache. Despite the clock increase with AMD’s now aging Deneb core the company has managed to keep the power consumption envelope within 125 watt. The processor that is made with 45nm technology houses a dual-channel memory controller supporting DDR2 and DDR3 memory up to 1333 MHz, with room for more when overclocking. As a Black Edition the processor is also unlocked for convenient overclocking.

AMD Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition is expected to launch any day and is compatible with current Socket AM2+, AM3 and of course the new AM3+ platform. The price hasn’t been revealed but will most likely be around $200 and replace the current quad-core flagship Phenom II X4 975 Black Edition.
