AMD earlier presented plans for launching processors with four cores in 2008, but now it has decided to speed things up a little. It now claims that it is planning on launching a quad core processor which can be used with system with up to 32 sockets, I.e. 128 physical cores. The reason may very well be that Intel recently announced its plans for launching a Quad core processor during 2007. Analysts claims though that AMD will be able to launch a Quad core CPU already 2006 if they wanted and at the same time perfect their 65nm manufacturing process.
