AMD is heading into one of its most important eras in a very long time where it has two all fresh micro architectures ready and got a free run with Intels’ chipset problems. Even though this is a smörgåsbord of technical delight there are rumors the company is lacking leadership and may be sold.

Already when Dirk Meyer stepped down as VP there were rumors that the board wanted to get rid of Meyer before a possible sale of the company, something the dedicated AMD leader would oppose.

All has been speculations and so is also the new statements that has come over the last few days. AMD’s stock rose by 5% yesterday and the reason is said to be rumors that Dell is interested in acquiring the the chip maker.

Exactly where this information comes from is uncertain, but a possible deal would mean a great change, not the least for Dell. The company was for long the largest PC builder on the planet and rarely made its own components.

Rumors of a possible Dell acquisition was strengthened by comments from analysts at Wedbush Securities.

“There is no management team there. There is some chatter that the company is up for sale. It is a far-fetched possibility,” kommenterade Patrick Wang på Wedbush Securities

AMD will need to find a new VP to lead the company into this era, obviously. CEO Thomas Seifert is currently steering the ship, but has no intention of staying on the position and with several big launches coming the company needs a captain. If Dell is part of the equation may be a totally different story, but only the future can tell.
