The concept of a RAM drive became reality when Gigabyte announced the i-RAM in 2005. The concept consists of memory modules acting as permanent storage, but it hasn’t been the success gigabyte was hoping perhaps. The technology is still alive tough and one of the companies that hopes to make it better is ACard. It has launched a new RAM drive called ANS-9010, which offer a whole lot more than previous models. Or what would you say about a maximal capacity of 64GB with 8 DDR2 slots, Flash-based back up and hours of battery time.
Over at TechReport they have taken a closer look at ANS-9010 that with the ridiculously low DDR2 prices looks to become a very interesting alternative for those who are looking for very fast storage.
Despite the theoretic max of the RAM at 6.4GB/s the performance of today’s SSDs are often on par and in some aspects even better than ACard’s RAM drive, but there are areas where the RAM drive really impresses.
