The 1TB barrier was broken long ago, and since then more companies have launched terabyte drives of their own. Over at TheTechLounge they decided to a closer look at a couple of these. Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000, Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 and Seagate Barracuda ES.2 was put to the test. Even though all rely on perpendicular magnetic recording technology, they’re quite different on the inside. Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 uses five platters and 10 read/write heads, while the Seagate drives need only four platters to reach 1TB.
The difference between the two Seagate drives are fairly small, but in turn, the difference between the Hitachi and Seagate drives varies from test to test, not always in the same amount and direction.
