Small preview imageA laptop for $100 sounds like an impossible task. But just that is what Nicholas Negroponte is trying to achieve with its nonprofitable organisation ”One Laptop Per Child”. The goal is to distribute laptops to the poorest children to help them in their development and education. To do this you will need an extremely cheap computer which the authorities can purchase in large numbers and can handle som rough handling. This had lead to some very unique solutions both for the design and power consumption. We’ve earlier reported about this very computer but they have started to layout the ground works for the first prototype. Or what do you say about a computer you can power up with a crank.

”The proposed $100 machine will be a Linux-based, full-color, full-screen laptop that will use innovative power (including wind-up) and will be able to do most everything except store huge amounts of data. These rugged laptops will be WiFi- and cell phone-enabled, and have USB ports galore.”

A very noble and innovative project which we truly hope will succeed. But as Negroponte himself said, there is still a lot to do as even $100 is a lot of money in some parts of the world.
