Intel is expected to ship about 10 million 865 based chipsets during the second quarter of 2006 and according to unofficial information about half, 5 million, of these would go to the motherboard manufacturer ASUS. ASUS hasn’t shared any detailed information, but says this is incorrect. If this would be true it says a lot about the position ASUS is in, even though it has been dominating for some time now. Intel will more or less sell out the relatively old chipset now and, among others, VIA has revealed some concern regarding the effects Intel’s returning sales of the 865 chipset could cause. Intel expects the 865 series to make up 30% of the company’s total chipset sales during the first quarter of 2006.
