Netbooks tappar relevans på marknaden

Netbook-kategorin slog igenom ordentligt på marknaden när ASUS lanserade sina Eee PC, sedan så valde de flesta tillverkarna att följa efter. Men Netbooks har på senare tid tappat momentum på marknaden och är inte längre ett lika intressant alternativ som de en gång har varit. Pat Bliemer erkänner detta, och säger att det beror på att Netbooks är en så kallade ”consumption device” – en lättare enhet att göra lättare sysslor på som att surfa och skicka mail.

”They are shrinking on the market.[…]I do think it’s mainly, it’s been a category where it’s a consumption device.”

Anledningen för Netbookens nedgång på marknaden tror han beror på främst två skäl. Det ena är surfplattan, som i princip är lika kapabel att göra saker på som en Netbook samt att den får ses som mer portabel. Det andra är för att vanliga bärbara blev så billiga, att de började konkurrera med Netbook-kategorin. Han tror ändå att det finns en plats för Netbooks på marknaden, även om den är liten. Men främst är det i utvecklingsländer de fortsätter att sälja.

”So you tell me how viable such a form factor is if you cannot get the price, I mean if you get a 15,6” standard perfectly working notebook for that type of money – is there still room left for a device like the netbook? We think there is, we are going to have Cedar Trail platform launch in next year.[…]Still in part of emerging markets netbooks are being sold, so we think that form factor is going to stay it’s just smaller then it is of course in it’s hay days, and we think this is how the market works. Like a new design comes out, new capability and user see it – like it – buy it. You need to continue to innovate because otherwise, you cannot rely on just one form factor and believe it is going to last forever. Those days are gone.”

Vi sa att smartphones och surfplattor verkligen har exploderat på marknaden, och att i takt med att de kommer ned i pris äger allt fler en sådan produkt. Trots att surfplattorna har skadat försäljningen av Netbooks tror han inte att det är en ersättare till den bärbara datorn, då det är någonting som fortfarande behövs när man ska arbeta produktivt.

”I think those who say that are, very few folks that I’ve meet have completely replaced notebooks with a tablet – they have both. It may have pushed out their plan to maybe buy a new notebook. So maybe it’s like “Maybe I am going to buy this, and maybe next year I am going to replace my notebook”. But we see when people are in the sofa, when they are traveling they like, they sit in the train they take their netbook and tablets bla bla bla, but when they have to go do something serious they go from consumption to productivity.”
