Gary Kovacs varit VD för Mozilla Corporation sedan 2010, och mycket utveckling har skett både där och i moderbolaget Mozilla Foundation sedan dess. I ett PM förmedlar Kovacs att han planerar att avgå som VD för företaget senare i år, och att Mozilla söker en ersättare.
Det är ett muntert PM som Mozilla-VDn skickar ut till de anställda på Mozilla Corporation, som ser tillbaka på hur företaget rört sig framåt sedan han axlade manteln i slutet på 2010. Mozilla Corporation, och moderbolaget Mozilla Foundation, är mest kända för Firefox, och sedan Kovacs tillträde har inte mindre än 17 versionsnummer av den populära webbläsaren passerat.
When I first joined Mozilla in 2010, it was clear that the Web was at a turning point. Competition on desktop was more intense than ever, smartphone adoption was on fire, and new challenges to openness were developing in both areas of these converging worlds. We needed to move faster, pivot hard to mobile, and scale globally. And we needed to change how we operated if we were to lead the Web through these market transitions. It was this challenge that lured me to Mozilla back in 2010, and it was this challenged that kept me engaged ever since. I just knew that if we focused our energies and executed with the passion and urgency that defined us, we would do amazing things together.”
Den traditionella PCn är på väg ut ur rampljuset, främst till förmån för smartphones och surfplattor, och den mobila marknaden har gjort ett tydligt avtryck även hos Mozilla, inte minst i och med utannonserandet av det mobila operativsystemet Firefox OS. Dessutom jobbar Mozilla med Samsung för att utveckla en ny ARM-optimerad renderingsmotor, Servo. Kovacs är väldigt positiv gällande sin tid hos Mozilla och den utveckling som skett, och väljer att avgå för att gå vidare till nya projekt. Han kommer dock sitta kvar i Mozillas styrelse och fortsätta ge sitt stöd till såväl Mozilla Corporation som Mozilla Foundation.
”It is my confidence in this team that makes this the right time for me to move on to the next phase of my personal journey. Today, I am announcing that I will be stepping down as CEO of Mozilla later this year. I am committed to continue through the search for a new CEO and to ensure that we do not miss a beat in the process. Following this, I will stay on as an active member of Mozilla’s board of directors – so I am staying within the family to help as much as I can.”
Innan sitt arbete hos Mozilla arbetade Kovacs bland annat för Sybase och Adobe. Det är oklart vad han planerar att arbeta med i framtiden, men Kovacs har i en intervju uttryckt att han vill arbeta med någonting mer ”kommersiellt inriktat”.
