Samsung recently announced that it has started to massproduce 1Gb DDR2 SDRAM memory chips with a new and more efficient manufacturing process. The 1Gb chips that are made today are based on 90nm technology while Samsung now has started to massproduce chips with 80nm technology. The advantages with this are several, both the costs and the size of the chips will drop. The new chips are actually about the same size of 512Mb chips made with 90nm technology and 36 percent smaller than an equivalent 1Gb chip made with 90nm.

Today most of the 1Gb chips goes to the server market, in large memory modules at 4GB. However due to the more efficient 80nm manufacturing process, ordinary consumers may be able to use these as well in 2GB modules.
