We have earlier reported about Apple’s decision to stop working with PortalPlayer which has supplied the media processor used in Apple’s iPod players. We didn’t know who would step up and replace PortalPlayer, but now Samsung has announced that it will deliver the MP3 media processor that Apple will use in its next generation iPod players. With this contract Samsung gets another component into Apple’s iPod family as it already supplies the player with its NAND flash memory chips.

”Kang referred to the company’s chip as the “PortalPlayer killer.” Samsung’s chip is based on 32-bit processor technology from ARM Holdings plc.

Samsung has really reached a new top as a circuit manufacturer and this was well reflected by the company’s increased value which recently surpassed ”chip giant” Intel. What Samsung’s new media processor means to Apple’s future iPods remains to be seen but we hope to find out more soon.
