Intel Core 2 Duo is now the name of Intel’s next generation processors for the stationary and portable market. Conroe and Merom are the code-names that both will be known as Core 2 Duo from now on. If this will cause any confusion, as the two are very different, remains to be seen. Intel has also revealed that the new family’s Extreme Edition model will be baptised, Core 2 Extreme, and the first model to arrive is actually a Core 2 Extreme. After that we will see Core 2 Duo E6700, as we’ve seen on earlier roadmaps for Conroe.
Both Conroe and Merom are made with 65nm technology and use a shared L2 cache with focus on performance/watt. As we’ve earlier reported the Core architecture will be compatible with today’s newest chipsets and thus motherboards and the only thing needed is that they come with the power requirements the Core architecture has. It still seems that Conroe will be launched in July 2006, while Merom gets to wait until August.
Intel is expected to display Core 2 Duo to the public on June 6 at Computex 2006 in Taipei, Taiwan. But already the new logotypes have been released.
