At the launch of Intel Ivy Bridge AMD cut prices across the board. Four months later the company has announced another price cuts and without news from Intel, this means AMd will phase out new models and bring in the next generation of processors.

Ordinary forces behind prices cuts include pressure from competing products or an urge to empty out surplus stock. Everything points to the latter now that AMD has lowered prices again affecting nearly all processors available from the chip maker. During the fall we expect new models in both the A series ”Trinity” with integrated graphics and the FX series ”Vishera” with up to eight cores.

A8-3870K – 100W $135 $115 $101 12.2%

Nearly all models in the A series has been cut with on average 10 to 20 percent. The biggest cut of 20 percent is with A6-3670K sporting four cores, HD 6530D graphics and unlocked multiplier. The exceptions include the quad-core 65 W models A6-3600 and A8-3800 that stay put. AMD is most likely looking to phase out all models before the coming Trinity architecture for desktops, sporting more powerful integrated graphics, but also faster processor cores.

The FX series also gets a minor price adjustment before the coming successor dubbed Piledriver. Not as much as the A series, but FX-6100 still drops by 17 percent, while FX-8120 is cut by only 7.3 percent.

AMD also sneaks out a piece of news in the form of FX-4130 that comes with two modules for a total of four cores at 3.8 GHz with a Turbo mode at 3.9 GHz. The processor has 4 MB L2 and 4 megabyte L3 cache with a 125 W TDP. It will appear in stores in the USA shortly, with no date as of yet for the rest of the world.

Besides the FX- and A series AMD also cuts prices of the old Phenom II series. They are relatively small price reductions on a few percent, but there are exceptions. Phenom II X4 955BE drops from 105 to 81 dollar, which is a big drop of 22.9 percent, while Phenom II X4 965BE drops from 115 to 91 dollar. Worth noting is that Phenom II X6 1100T has a recommended price of 194 dollar, which is actually higher than FX-8150. Production of Phenom II processors stopped last year and has been hard to get a hold of, which means this last price cut will be the very last we see of them.
