Intel has since November 2005 been shipping processors with support for Virtualization Technology (VT). The technology allows several operating systems on the same computer by dividing the hardware’s resources between the operating systems. With today’s computers, which are getting better and better at parallel computing, this shouldn’t be a problem really. Despite that the support for VT has been around inside Intel’s circuits it has been left unused since there has been no support for VT with the platforms. However now Intel has released a new BIOS for its Xeon MP 7000 based system that activates VT for servers with 4 or more processors. When VT will find its way into our homes remains to see though.
